5 practical tips to lessen fan/zine production cost: a primer to young zinesters

5 practical tips to lessen fan/zine production cost: a primer to young zinesters

Nothing is so extraordinary when I post late updates. Hehehe. Actually, I don’t think the term “update” fits in here.  I hardly have the time to post everything that enters my mind. The 2-hour ride consumes too much of my time and long before I begin to write a single word, I often find myself longing for a deep slumber.

Now going back, we all know that production costs have always been a major issue among zinesters. In as far as I am concerned, this basically explains why many of these publications hardly see their fifth issue. Ephemeral, as Ma’am Raya would describe it. Knowing that these printed works hardly rely on sponsorships, one could just imagine the expenses that these zinesters have to endure. Nevertheless, this dilemma gave birth to some of the most ingenious ways of how zine editors could stretch out their finances just to publish their zines.

So to all young zinesters or aspiring zinesters, here are the tricks that you should know by heart. hahaha

  • Limit the number of pages – Use smaller fonts. But not too small that your readers can hardly see a single word. The idea in here is to put as much content in a single page. I have a suggestion in here. Sure, you want to put everything. Yet, if you are on a tight budget, then maybe you could save those ideas for the next issue. It is just my two cents ok. :)
  • Patronize cheap photocopying centers – Last Friday, Alvin, one of the writers of Infected Mind Zine and I met. I handed him a copy of Herald X, Verbal Offense and Kanto and it cost him P56 to photocopy all those fanzines. Thanks to Copytrade. There you could a powder photocopy is around 60 cents. For liquid, you have to pay 75 cents, if my memory does not betray me.   If you have the time to go to U-belt, or in areas that are beside the school, I bet you could get a much lower photocopying price.
  • PDF file conversion – There are thousands of PDF converters online that can be used for free. This is perfect for those who have contacts abroad and in the province. It is easy, fast, convenient and cost-effective. But if you have already released a paper zine and some of your readers are craving for a copy, then maybe we could meet. I’ll scan it, convert it and send it to you. We could meet either on Friday or Saturday. But don’t pressure me ha. Hehehehe.
  • Make a network – There are many foreign bands and supporters that are visiting us. In case one of your contacts resides within the visitors’ area, then you could ask them to deliver it for you when they return. Be thankful and maybe you could give them a token of appreciation.
  • The registered mail –  This was mentioned by one of the zinesters. Unfortunately, I was unable to get his name, but it was a very good point during the discussion. It pays to have a registered mail rather than suffer the consequences of being labeled as a rip-off because your contact did not receive his or her package. Aside from being a precautionary measure it likewise prevents you from spending another hundred bucks to send the zine again.
On the other hand, the readers also play an important role in helping zinesters and this is via buying these publications. Now if you have issues with that, then that is your problem. As far as I am concern, I will buy zines. Why? Because buying these publications is not synonymous to profiteering. The people behind these could hardly break even. If they get something out of this, then these zines could have been peddled like those tabloids in the streets. But it does not go that way right? And besides, your guilty pleasures, a pack of cigar, for example,  is far more expensive than zines and all you get is a dose of nicotine which takes 7 years of your life. Come on guys! Free lunches do not come everyday.--
Fan/zines are the epitome of a free press in the truest sense of the word

Fuck the State of the Nation Address Demo (Philippines)

Fuck the State of the Nation Address Demo (Philippines)

Monday. July 25.  About 40 anarchists wearing masks and mostly dress in
black vandalized and disrupted the area of Commonwealth Avenue where the
State of the Nation Address was held. Anarchists individuals- without
leaders and consciously had a clear mind and visions were small in numbers
in comparison to around 8000 authoritarian left who recruited some people
to march for pay or in exchange for food while being granted by the state
with permit zone to revolt, wishing for their demands and claiming for the
revolution in conjunction with corporate media and state institutions who
fuck up the lives of millions of people in the archipelago.  These are
everyday reflected in the unprecedented growth of poverty, ecological
destruction, homelessness, unemployment, hunger and other miserable
conditions most of the inhabitants of the country endure.

The deployment of massive number of police forces and riot cops with
batons and shields were fair enough for the authoritarian left to set
things as it was always use to be.  Every time is another rallying cry of
pacifism, persuading and influencing the masses to another form of
government to live by, wishing it will happen one day. Off course, they
could not get in closely to the Hall of Congress at the back of
Sandiganbayan (office of the Ombudsman), where the ruling president
(Benigno Aquino III) will proudly address his 1 year of accomplishment of
lies and deceit.  The so-called revolutionary tactics of the authoritarian
left is widely known in front of the TV screen which is for them is ok.
The state and the left knew each other well. Each of them is a ruling and
authoritarian form. There are bunch of leftist politicians building their
nests in congressional bodies making laws and profit at the expense of the
obedient citizen.

12 nn. Anarchist demo began. Reclaiming the streets. The normal flow of
traffic was severely disturbed. It was an unexpected moment for most of
the authorities who were there on that day. As they put more attention on
the other side of the road- the permitted zone, to control the motion of
thousands of anti-SONA leftists protestors via radios and walking
surveillance, the authorities were completely shocked and were freezed to
the ground seeing anarchists mobilizing coming from a different way,
counter flowing the march of the permitted zone, walking through the other
side of the road. For legal matters it is definitely illegal to mobilize
there.  Few comrades with bicycle were also on the demo controlling the
traffic so demonstrators would not get hit by aggressive cars.

Police authorities don’t know what to do They were just standing up,
confused and traumatized, although they were many. They see anarchists
mobilizing on that day like watching TV, as traumatic and desensitized
like most people care to watch the screen and the news.

The bad thing is that it was inherent, normal, and accepted that the
authorities kill people in front of our very eyes. For someone who could
lively see such atrocity this leaves people in a traumatized state and
fear. In a sudden moment on that day police appears to be one but is
nothing so special. Police are just mere repressors, a tool of the state.

Screams and chant of anger were raised by anarchist dissidents” Aparato ng
Estado Wasakin, Durugin, Gawing Pagkain” (State apparatus, Smash, Destroy,
turn it into food). “Fuck police brutality, Fuck police oppression” where
every police line in the service of command could actually hear it. Main
banner say “Walang pagbabago  sa patuloy na reporma. Anarkistang
rebolusyon ang solusyon. Wasakin ang hirarkiya. Depensahan ang kalikasan.
Tapusin ang kahirapan.” (“There is no change in continues reform.
Anarchist revolution is the solution. Destroy hierarchy. Defend ecology.
End poverty.”). It was loud. No megaphone only screams and drums and brave
passion. Few young street kids eventually attended the demo, having fun as
they kind of like amazed when they see the action amidst traffic following
at the back of the protestors walking. Community, passersby, and
neighborhood around Commonwealth area began to seriously read the banner
having a very close look and curiosity. Leaflets of detailed
statement(Tagalog) made by anarchists (against SONA) were hand-outed to
folks around. It was always new imaginative tactics for anarchist to fight
against the political death machine in the local level, to every SONA,
WTO, JPEPA, ASEAN, APEC and other capitalist trade agreements ruining the
world and its inhabitants to annihilation and destruction. SONA, few years
ago the national flag were burn.

Now, paint bombs were thrown in buses visibly labeled with corporate
advertising. Roads of the permit zone were also smash with paints. Circle
A symbol penetrated some parts of the roads. Street walls and traffic
signboard was covered with graffiti and stickers mainly directed against
the state and capitalist oppression. Few vendors selling mami noodles
along the area reacted by saying that the said action was beautiful and
fun and momentarily gave a share of noodles for free to one of the
anarchists. Firecrackers were set in when the group stop along the UCPB
bank and protested there. At this time, anarchists were already in the
permitted zone after crossing the road protesting among thousands of
leftist marching.  Still the vandalism continues. Various media that came
from the marching leftist political bloc, AKBAYAN party list
(rejectionist) stop for while and covered the anarchist banner message. A
middle finger from one of the masked protestors was pointed to one of the
media who wanted to cover them with a close angle. Leaflets were still
hand-outed to mostly young students who were with the leftist march. They
are mostly recruited. When young students see masked protestors in front
of the bank, they were also kind of curious and interested leaving the
rank and file march a bit delayed.

It was war from our hearts. It was spontaneity.

No arrests.

The Politics of Hitchhiking Culture in the Philippines

The Politics of Hitchhiking Culture in the Philippines

What is hitchhiking? What are the reasons why we travel this way?
The word hitchhiking comes from the western slang that refers to getting a free lift from one place to another. This has been practiced for centuries in western countries. But in the Philippine context, the history of hitch hiking has never been traced or documented. From the time punk culture boomed in mid 80’s, it spread to all ages especially the youth. In late 90’s, several punk started embracing the theory of anarchism, many managed to establish contacts from foreign countries and received various kinds of informative reading materials about anarchism, D.I.Y. ethics and other radical ideas. In addition, they also received punk stuffs such as fanzine, audio tapes, patches, etc. From the materials they read, they were exposed to post mainstream ideas such as anti commercialism, anti authoritarianism, etc. From there many punks started hitting the road through hitchhiking. One of the known bands in the punk scene is “Not4Sale”, a radical group from Manila who travelled around the archipelago in the late 90’s to early 2000. The group influenced many punks in the scene during their time and encouraged every punk kid to embrace hitchhiking and anarchist activism and it became the life style of random punks around the archipelago. Now most member of the group ended up to ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness) an organization of Hare Krishna practitioners.
Out of my curiosity, I started asking my neighbors about hitchhiking. From my inquiry I was surprised with all their answers regarding the culture of hitchhiking. In the 70’s, many locals were already doing it. They simply get a free ride on the trucks carrying fruits, vegetables and logs that go to the town. They call it “okasyon” in local term. At that time, there’s not much public transport in rural and remote areas. According to my grandfather’s personal experience, he ran away from home during his teens and went to Davao from Cebu. He was also engaged in “okasyon” through private vehicles and according to him, it’s easier that time compared to the present because many laws were made regarding public transport.
Why hitchhiking?
Hitchhiking is not limited; everyone can do this whether young or old as long as your body can manage.
Hitchhiking is free traveling where there’s no need to depend on tourism or in any promotions from travel agencies at your own discretion. That is, you’re able to control your time and choose your destination. By which, we lessen our support to huge public transport companies that exploit passengers and workers. In addition, it is also a way to minimize our energy consumption per capita.
There are many good things pervasive in the culture of hitchhiking such as increased self-esteem, heightened awareness of consumer culture, established friendship and enhanced street skills. Added to that, you will also feel the hospitality of anyone you may encounter in the road and see the beautiful landscapes along your travel. Every person traveling this way has a story and experience to share. Many even became popular in traveling this way just like Chris McCondless, the protagonist from the book “Into The Wild” (Jon Krakauer, 1996) and Juan Pablo Villarino with his partner, Laura who hitchhiked in Middle East and Europe, and many others.
According to some of our friends from Europe and Asia Pacific, it’s much easy and comfortable to hitch in this archipelago compared to other places they have been to. On one hand, some people here are hospitable and kind to foreign travelers. Well, this is not a promotion, these are all firsthand accounts. On the other, some are aggressive and hostile. Another experience they had while having fun boarding behind the big trucks is, sometimes people greets them with big sweet smile along the way saying “HEY JOE!” If you’re a
European or from another part of the globe you might get confused about it, but don’t feel being discriminated. Most Filipinos stereotype white people as Americans, mainly because of the long occupation of American soldiers during the American colonial times here in this archipelago. Don’t get pissed they just want to be friendly. You can also respond by yelling “Hey JUAN!”
Sometimes accidents are inevitable, but we can prevent them through self-discipline and responsible actions. There was an unexpected event from the past like of the SAGADA 11, a crowd of hitchhiker punks and backpackers who were arrested and tortured. Due to the suspicious minds of the merciless police they were accused as NPAs and imprisoned for 10 months. This situation suggests that it’s better if we make bogus identification for security purposes. Another variable to consider is the possibility of being beaten by hooligans and gangsters. Here are some things to keep in mind:
 Don’t be arrogant and braggart
 Be humble during the conversation
 Explain the reason why you do hitchhiking
 Be pacifist as much as possible
 Carry pepper/chili spray
 Learn self-defense
Have fun and have a safe road trip!

PINOY ZINESTERS

INTERVIEW w/ CARLOS OF WE THE INFECTED ZINE (AUG 2011)

1. Can you pls introduce yourself and can you tell the readers something about your zine?

- Hey there Infekted Minds! hehe. I am Carlos Lanzona from Las Pinas City/Philippines! I am the sole guy that writes and makes up We The Infected fanzine, basically the zine is about passionate old school metal and punk rock styled music + a few of my personal thoughts about everything under the sun be it religion, music and so on down on paper. I give it away for free or donation but prefer trade. contributions + articles about anything are welcome too!

2.
What influenced / inspire you to make your own zine?

- The local anti-poseur/anti-trend DIY thrash band Paganfire inspired me to be part of underground networking because I find the concept fascinating, pure and just real non bullshit stuff.. Nonoy, Axeman of PF is probably like my mentor or something. he gave me my first zine Noise Gate#1 from macedonia and I've been collecting zines ever since. Paganfire ideologies play a huge role in my POV they have the proper diy mindset. I'm a raging fanboy, they rule.

3.
Zine's that influence you?

- I Remember Halloween, Konspirazine, Incidental Afterthought and Aspire zine is a huge influence specially Aspire they had a line that said "If you don't like this zine by all means do your own" or something like that... I liked Jay's zine very much and did my own version as well! hehe, I remember halloween is soooo goood. The consistent quality is awesome Dane is epic, lets just leave it at everybody is awesome. sir Jep and Wordslinger great zinesters.

4.
How many issues have you release so far? Any future release?

- Only one so far,the first issue is a bit shitty and all over featuring interviews w/ thrash and punk bands, but I'm working on the second one right now. We the infected will never stop unless my arms get amputated and fed to alligators even then I will try to learn to type w/ my feet.

5.
what can you say about our local zine scene today?

- Even though I think I'm not part of the punk scene because I don't know many people and don't listen to as much punk as I do heavy metal. I really love the local d.i.y. punk/hardcore scene very much because its filled with unbridled energy no showing off and just playing their hearts out.. Same w/ the punk/hxc zines they rule. I don't like the metal zine scene so much outside of the now dormant ones like TRDNT NTN and METAL HAVOC because its too expensive and clinical IMO. Also most of them I don't like the genre's they tackle since I only listen to punk, thrash, speed and heavy metal, if you were to spread propaganda you should make it top priority for the message to be access-able. I haven't read WOD and IDP though so no comment on them, but they've been wayyy established before I was born( i think) hehe..

6.
your goal?

- My goal is just to write and write and write and when I get to a point where I piss too many people off. I probably am doing the right thing. I think there is too much apathy in the metal scene right now. Lots of things need to be noticed like how some so called Metal Pioneers or old schoolers have these cult of personalities, everyone is clinging on/listening to their unproductive procrastinating bullshit opinions and rants and living off that example when we should start thinking for ourselves not let anybody command our way of thinking and break those respect barriers when all they do is just cling on to their past glories and boring tired stories of who's more metal and old school corrupting the airwaves, magazines, T.V. and other forms of media with their putrid negative bile without doing anything worthy of praise up to the present. these things hold us back as a community and need to be abolished as soon as possible for us to run more smoothly be it as an individual, production, collective or as a music/radical/political/whatever scene as a whole. Out of all of pioneers I respect sir Paul Magat a lot he's awesome and cool still very relevant up to this very moment....

7.

- Salamat nang marami tol sa interest for this interview! If some of the answers are too long pare okay lang i-edit para umikle or to fit the pages of your webzine/fanzine pasensya na nasa writing mood kasi ako ngayon joey, I know u understand hehe. :)
Thanks again for the interest! Long Live Infekted Mind!

PINOY ZINESTER'S

INTERVIEW w/ JOAB OF REAL TIGHT CREW ZINE (AUG 2011)

1.  Can you pls introduce yourself and can you tell the readers something about your zine?

- I am Joab and I am behind Real Tight Crew with the help of my friend Archi. I started making zines way back in 1997. The first one I made was called Infinite. It only lasted for one issue and was poorly distributed. But I got the chance to feature our very own legendary hardcore punk band BIOFEEDBACK. Then next was Noise Refuge. It only lasted for two issues again with poor distribution and I’ve featured Sampcore pioneer Swedish raw punk band LIE DETECTOR. I’ve lost all the master copies for these old zines hence the birth of Real Tight Crew  which for me is the most organize fanzine I’ve ever done in my entire fanzine making career. Real Tight Crew is about our local hardcore punk scene. When I was gathering stuffs to put in issue one I said to myself I am going to concentrate more in our local bands that I like. Not necessarily innovative but those who really grabs the DIY aspect of our scene, good music to boot and lyrics that are challenging. Not only bands but opinions of selected individuals whom I know can give worthy article that can be really interesting. The first and second issue of RTC has a column section which is really great. I know hardcore punk is international but I just want to support more our local scene to prove that we can really do it ourselves. Well in issue one and four there are foreign features but it is only minimal compare to the coverage I’ve done for our local scene and I am really proud of it.

2. What influenced / inspire you to make your own zine?

- My uncle inspired me to make my own zine as he was also doing his own at that time. He taught me all the things like how to make a flyer for my zine, how to write a letter to bands that I like to feature, the layout and we’re talking about typewriter, glue, cutter and pentel pen. This is my ticket to enter the world of hardcore punk because I don’t know how to play any instruments. But I know I have an ability to write and I have an ambition to become a writer. I used fanzine making to broaden that capability. I don’t consider myself a prolific writer I don’t know if I have a right grammar. But I think it is coherent to understand what I am trying to convey. And that is liberating in fanzine there are no rules all you have to do is to make it spontaneous. Obviously the inspiration comes from our local scene and my never ending love for bands like Feud, Disabuse and Biofeedback. Also it comes from observation in my surrounding that had an impact to me, and opinions of other people in hardcore punk.

3. Zine's that influence you?

- I’ll start from the old ones ANTI, KEEP DA FAITH, STEP FORWARD, GET IN TOUCH and CONSPIRACY. The new ones are I REMEMBER HALLOWEEN, INCIDENTAL AFTERTHOUGHT, BREAKFAST INSOMNIA, KONSPIRA ZINE, ASPIRE and BELIEVE. For the foreign ones I am heavily into HEARTATTACK, INSIDE FRONT and SLUG & LETTUCE all are defunct now. Of course MRR is always there. I always wanted to follow the format of HEARTATTACK with massive columns to read unfortunately I can’t do it in RTC because people in our local scene don’t have the time to write anymore and I can’t blame them given the situation we have here in our country.

4, How many issues have you release so far? Any future release?

- I have four issues under my belt and I am happy for it given the history of my career in fanzine making. I am currently working now on my fifth issue also with coverage for three active zinesters we have in our local scene and they are I Remember Halloween, Incidental Afterthought and Konspira Zine. The makers of these zines had done a great job to keep print zines alive and to feature them in Real Tight Crew is my support for their passion.

5, what can you say about our local zine scene today?

- It is minimal compared during the 90’s and it is in a good way. There were a lot of shitty zines that exist during that time who just wanted to get free stuffs from the mail. Not unlike now even if it’s in small scale but the passion and enthusiasm is huge and for me that is priceless. Take for example Incidental Afterthought who manages to release 14 issues and that is really an achievement.

6. your goal?

-The finite lifespan of local zines are only up to two issues so my goal for Real Tight Crew is to release ten worthy issues.  After finishing my tenth issue let’s see from there if I will continue this. I don’t want to say I am here to make zines for life that would be shallow and most of the time who says “for life” they are the ones who are prone to failure.  I mean I was on the verge of quitting I had a hard time putting out the second issue. Thanks to my friend Archi who kicked my ass to get me moving and stopped me from whining a lot. By the time I released the second I was unstoppable and I am happy for it. The other goal is to promote camaraderie within the confines of our small scene. And how will I do that? It’s easy let’s forget about politics and let’s start by just having fun. Fun meaning drinking beer, taking drugs or choosing a sober existence and drinking ice tea while having a chat marathon with your real friends.  Attend a gig enjoy the band you like if you don’t like the band then just go out not by talking shit behind their back. And I much prefer trade it’s more friendly.

7. shouts / hate's/ email / website

-Thanks man for giving me space in your zine. I really appreciate it. Mad props to Archi, Joseph, Dane and Jep. Also to Banjo. Be sure to grab a copy of new Dispatches that will be out real soon you will not get disappointed I assure you. I am still looking for writers to contribute in my column section. Beware I am strict on deadlines I am in a way a control freak. Drop me a line or two in my email: mistakenfiction@yahoo.com  or visit my blog: www.anylastword.blogspot.com. Peace out from here on in.

The Awakening

  • The Awakening

Let’s talk about life: when the feelings stir,
when the thoughts move to light from the darkest blur.
When the skin curls, when the flesh winds,
when the mind, groping shyly, an answer finds.
When you seek the unthought with bashful eyes
and, pale with fright, its staring-back realize.
Let’s ask ourselves how we can feel good
when we see that sleep cripples every flow,
makes people tame, makes the breath go slow.
When you see you’re not like this
    what in others you miss
    When the earth quakes,
    the appearance breaks,
and what sticks to the fakes
    is only blood.
Let’s have a guess if you were appreciating
    life slowly disintegrating
and plenty of wisdom is decorating
    every single spark inflating.
    When deeds take their toll,
    in self purpose they loll,
and when dreams burst like bubbles of Rock’n’Roll.
Because you see you’re not like this
    what in others you miss.
When you grub in the unknown for a little bit of luck
and, when you find it, it’s just a boring fuck.
Let’s talk about hope, when you raise your eye
and the voices from your head to your heart do fly.
When your tongue pierces through your lips so you’ll
    utter words so cruel
    to break the rules.
    When you raise your fists,
    when your body twists,
and what sticks to your wrists
    is only anger.
